This past weekend was the most relaxing I've had since I started back to work 5 1/2 months ago. I hadn't expected it to be so good, as, ironically, the first weekend I've had off in a month co-incided with John needing to do a class trip to Toronto on Saturday all day, dawn till dusk. However, it turned out that Aislinn and I had a really terrific chance to be together, just the two of us, and that, although we missed him, John's absence could be turned into a positive thing.
Even though Aislinn and I did nothing at all exciting, we took a lot of pleasure in each other's company. We walked D.J. down to the grocery store and took turns going in and selecting breakfast items for ourselves; we watched three episodes of the first season of Heroes in bed and two episodes of the first season of The X-Files; we made some Pillsbury cinnamon buns and devoured them; we played with the dog. It was a wonderfully relaxing day.
On Sunday, John and I got groceries in the morning, and then all three of our children absented themselves from the house for the afternoon; what a treat! Of course, one of them took the car, but John and I went back to bed and watched Heroes all afternoon [John and I are going to have to buy season one after we return it to the student who loaned it to him; it's wonderful], and we did laundry in between episodes.
I wish every weekend could be just like this, but the truth of the matter is, that I work most Sundays, so that Saturdays have to involve grocery shopping, so there isn't the time just to hang out like this with my family. However, I look forward to having days off this summer when my entire family will be home.

Finally today I am sitting on the living room sofa, covered with blankets, the dog on the floor next to me, and tension ebbing away. It hasn't been the easiest few days but I am trying to deal with them with humour and to shake them off as best I can. Worse things do happen at sea, I'm told!
My big plan was to relax on Monday, which didn't work so well as my boss was sick and I needed, and was glad to work his shift for him. I was less glad by the end of the evening, as I had an absolute creep come into the store who was obviously not there to buy glasses, but to pick up the optical saleswoman, who was quite averse to being picked up, to having her hair stroked, and having her hand held. It was only at that point that I noticed how deserted my end of the store is on a Monday night - on Mondays the travel agent closes early, the portrait studio closes early, and the cash desk for mattresses and vacumns has been moved to a different aisle. Quiet. I finally managed to get rid of the jerk, only to have him jump out at me from one of the linen aisles after store closing - OMG, I thought I was going to have a heart attack or simply drop dead in my tracks - I told him I would scream if he didn't go away NOW. Then I found security. I worked the next night, too, and Mr. Creep had said he'd come back the next night [to give me a day to change my mind about him, seriously!], but this time I had the travel agents on alert, entertainment on alert, and, most importantly, security on alert and doing spot checks every little while. Still, I was jumping out of my skin every time anyone came into the optical shop.
During Tuesday in the afternoon, we had two customers come into the store and shout at the optician and I - I have been working there for five months and I've never had anyone displeased with the services or the glasses before, and to have two on one day seemed a little much! Actually, one of them was displeased with the glasses ["pieces of crap", in his words], the other person wanted a refund because she couldn't see out of her glasses, and blew up because we needed to put the refund back on her Visa card - if you pay with your Visa, the refund goes on your Visa - most stores work with this policy. She yelled because she wanted the cash.  Further investigation revealed that the reason she couldn't see was that she hadn't cleaned her glasses since she got them in December, and they were simply disgustingly dirty - not a wonder she couldn't see!
Yesterday I wasn't working but my son was home sick and even though he had been sick in the morning, a couple of Tylenol made him feel better - and Tylenol makes him hyper. It did when he was two, and it does now that he's 16. So yesterday I shared the house with a Mexican jumping bean and it was anything but relaxing, as he likes to jump out from behind doors and tension-making stuff like that which just makes me shriek. And you can tell him a hundred times but it does NOT sink in.
What I really need is a vacation. Haven't had one since 2001. Need one soon! Island! Beach! Rum drinks!
I have to work tomorrow but not at all this weekend. I'm seriously looking forward to that.  And John brought home a Hemingway book from school for me to read - 'The Snows of Kilimanjaro and other Stories', which I'm going to read next, and I'm excited about that.
