How can I resist a book meme? I swiped this one from [info]meneleth.

How can I pass up a book meme? Got this one from Lothithil.

1. Find the nearest book.
2. Turn to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the next three sentences in your journal.
5. Invite your firends to do the same.

The following is a three-sentence excerpt from Charles Dickens' Great Expectations.
""Ah!", said Biddy, quite in a whisper, as she looked away at the ships. And then repeated, with her former pleasant change, "Shall we walk a little further, or go home?" I said to Biddy we would walk a little further, and we did so, and the summer afternoon toned down into the summer evening, and it very beautiful.

I've started reading the book, but have no idea who Biddy is; I look forward to finding out.

This is one that I swiped from [info]caersidi

1. Which book do you irrationally cringe away from reading, despite seeing only positive reviews?

I absolutely hate self-help books, especially if they've been recommended by Oprah. I have nothing against Oprah, just against self-help books that she's recommended.

2. Borrowing shamelessly from the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde, you are told you can't die until you read the most boring novel on the planet. While this immortality is great for a while, eventually you realize it’s past time to die. Which book would you expect to get you a nice grave?

I do own a book which I use when insomnia hits. It's a great reference book, but lousy, soporifc, and perhaps life-ending reading: The Textbook of Human Evolutionary Anatomy by Christopher Dean and Michael Aiello.

3. Which book have you pretended, or at least hinted, that you’ve read, when in fact you’ve been nowhere near it?

Possibly War and Peace. I honestly did try to read it.

4. You’re interviewing for the post of Official Book Adviser to some VIP (who’s not a big reader). What’s the first book you’d recommend and why?

Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere. I'd want to work with someone who had an imagination and a willingness to suspend disbelief, and his/her opinion of this book would let me know a lot about that person.

5.A good fairy comes and grants you one wish: you will have perfect reading comprehension in the foreign language of your choice. Which language do you go with?

Hmmm. Probably French - I have some French but not enough for my liking - as I'd love to read André Gide in the original French, and also the book Les Grands Meaulnes by Alain Robbe-Grillait [all spelling of book and title questionable] as they had such a profound effect on the writings of John Fowles.

6. A mischievous fairy comes and says that you must choose one book that you will reread once a year for the rest of your life (you can read other books as well). Which book would you pick?

I already have an annual reread of Pride and Prejudice and of Wallace Stegner's Angle of Repose. I suppose the good fairy could add Jane Smiley's A Thousand Acres to that list, or perhaps something by Rohinton Mistry.

7. I know that the book blogging community, and its various challenges, have pushed my reading borders. What’s one bookish thing you ‘discovered’ from book blogging (maybe a new genre, or author, or new appreciation for cover art – anything)?

The only book blogging community of which I'm a member is the 50 book challenge - but I have tried so many different books, successful and unsuccessful, because of the community. The bookish thing that I've learned is that vampire stories are cool! I'd never read one before because I can be a pretentious ass sometimes, but I soaked up vampires for about three months last year, and Stephenie Meyer's Twilight was honestly one of my favourite books of 2007.

8. That good fairy is back for one final visit. Now, she’s granting you your dream library! Describe it. Is everything leather-bound? Is it full of first edition hard covers? Pristine trade paperbacks? Perhaps a few favourite authors have inscribed their works? Go ahead – let your imagination run free.

-  a really good collection of Canadian fiction. I'm embarassed by how little I own.
- every Pulitzer Prize-winning book ever published.
- a first edition of Pride and Prejudice
- a book by every literature Nobelist
- tons of poetry
- an absolutely perfect comfy chair to curl up in, with nearby areas for notebooks, pens, water bottle, and perhaps a mini-fridge stocked with Diet Pepsi.

Stolen from [info]caersidi.

A British magazine [the name of which I think is Empire, but I've forgotten already!], published its list of the top 50 TV shows ever. Of course, some British LJers took the list and made it into a meme, which I've decided to do, as I think this sort of thing is fun!

Italics for a show that you've watched at least once.
Bold for a show that you've watched every episode of.
Italics and bold for a show that you own DVDs or tapes of. [doesn't need to be the whole series.]

13th-Mar-2008 01:22 pm - Meme - 10 Fictional Characters you wouldn't kick out of your bed
books fiction, beautiful birds by alison jay, smiling cupcakes, raining hearts by belleandboo, mean people suck, birthday candle, books old coat new books, oh crap! cookie, woohoo!, tree hugger by belleandboo, books child reading, mrs. tiggy-winkle round, bluejay, cardinals, omfg joey, hrumph alice wonderland, gorgeous blue flowers, cupcakes mmmmmm, pooh writing, girl kissing dog, fuck fuck fuck, fabric flower in pink, dog walked by arty woman, hannah firmin bird, bunnies in grass, rainstorm & umbrella by alison jay, grapefruit eyes
With apologies to my mother-in-law, and reassurances that all these characters are FICTIONAL!!!!

1.  If you've seen the icon, you'll guess Aragorn from LOTR as played by whatshisname.
2.  Mr. Rochester from Jane Eyre. Totally yummy.
3.  Remington Steele - that's where Pierce Brosnan got his start.
4.  Definitely Captain Jack Sparrow!

This is harder than I thought it would be.

5.  The writer guy that Colin Firth plays in 'Love, Actually'. I tend to like bumbling. Or the guy who needs a nanny played by Colin Firth in 'Nanny McPhee', also bumbling. Is he the new Hugh Grant?
6.  Due to head cold issues, I can't remember the name of the man that Emma Woodhouse marries in 'Emma'. But I loved him in the book, and he was very sexy in the Gwyneth Paltrow movie.
7.  And that reminds me of Captain Wentworth from 'Persuasion'. Once again, loved him in the book, and Ciaran Hinds was great in the movie - both of them are invited, in character of course.
8.  How could I forget George of the Jungle??!! [Brendan Fraser]
9.  There must be someone out there who would offer soccer player Luca Toni a movie role so I could involve him in this. [He plays for Fiorentino - known to us as Florence, and played for Italy in the last World Cup.]
10. Oh, yes. Neither my nine-year old daughter or I can remember the name of the character that Channing Tatum played in 'Step Up', but him.
11. An extra number so that I can include anything that Denise Richards has ever played. I want her on my list.
12.  Dear God! I've left out the Captain and the Doctor and Wash from Firefly! Wow! This isn't hard at all!
13. And Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation!
14. Oh no! That means I've also left out G'Kar from Babylon 5!

I think I will stop now. This game is a lot of fun and the possibilities are bordering on endless!  Thanks, [info]meneleth
