Frindle by Andrew Clements, 1996, 105 pages.
Genre: kidlit
Basic Overview: Grade 5 student Nick asks his crusty old teacher, Mrs. Granger, how words are made, and when he discovers that words are made by people, he decides to make one of his own: he calls his pen a
frindle. Then something happens that Nick never expected: the word
frindle, from being popular in Nick's class, becomes popular throughout Nick's school, the high school, the town, and then the country, and internationally.
Personal Opinion: This book was really inspiring, and left me feeling good all over, like a hot fudge sundae for the brain. Winner of the Christopher Award, which rewards books, movies, and television shows for instilling the highest values of mankind [whatever that means, exactly!], the story shows what comes of excellent teaching and great examples. I recommend this book to everyone, and if you have a teacher you need to buy a gift for, this book would make a lovely present.
