Well, it's spring today.
Hah!
The snow is melting a little, so that the grass verges are uncovered maybe two feet from the pavement. That's handy, as there are no sidewalks where I live, so people can walk on the grass verge.
And there's been enough melt that our front walkway is bare.
The snow in our front yard is only about two feet deep now, or what ever knee-deep is on me. It was a lot deeper, so I guess some sunlight and warmth have penetrated.
This is not what spring is supposed to be like. I like crocuses in my spring. Equally important to me as the spring equinox is first crocus day - then I know that winter is over. Some people are big fans of groundhog day but it's first crocus day for me. We have purple and yellow crocuses on our front lawn, but I suppose we'd have to be able to see our front lawn to see crocuses.
Damn snow.
After D.J. and I had delivered Aislinn to school this morning, he wanted to stay outside and watch the cars and the people walk by. Our driveway has no snow on it, so in honour of the arrival of spring I sat outside with him, in a goose-down parka and mittens and a hat. We watched the world go by as I slowly freezed my butt off on the driveway, sitting with my dog, stroking him and talking to him. It was companionable, if cold.
I will admit that there were a lot of birds. I could hear crows, a seagull flew overhead, there were the ubiquitous Canada Geese merrily quanking, and there were a couple of songbirds making a lovely racket in trees across the street.
Both D.J. and I want real spring to come. It will be lovely to take really long walks across verdant fields. I want to sit in a field of wildflowers with him. I've never wanted spring to come so badly before, but I've never had a dog to share it with before.
Go away, snow.
